Organisational Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Strategic Communications Branch (SCB), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. SCB supports headquarters and field operations in public outreach on humanitarian action. It oversees senior leadership public advocacy and media, including the global spokesperson function, messaging and speeches, and social media. It also oversees brand and internal communication. The Web Editor reports to the Senior Writer/Editor of the Media Relations Section.
Within delegated authority the Web Editor is responsible for the following duties:
- Ensures website coverage to publicize priority issues and/or major events, monitoring consistency in public messaging and taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome.
- Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends as they relate to OCHA’s mandate, and uses this intel to inform web coverage.
- Edits news and feature stories for the OCHA corporate website, and ensures that it conforms with OCHA standards, policy and practice and that it is in line with OCHA advocacy priorities.
- Undertakes activities to promote digital media coverage (e.g. coverage of press conferences, senior officials interviews and other special activities, web stories, blogs, articles, etc.) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a web strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active outreach efforts to other parts of OCHA, proposing website coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with other parts of the section on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
- Produces or oversees production of communication products which includes proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts.
- Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books.
- Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies.
- Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
- Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies.
- Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

EducationAdvanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work ExperienceA minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience in managing websites and writing and editing for digital media is required. Experience in summarizing complex issues and tailoring writing to different audiences is required. Experience in writing and editing on humanitarian issues is desirable. Previous experience within the UN Common System and/or other comparable international organization is desirable. A minimum of two (2) years in the last five (5) years of international field experience in aid operations is desirable.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
