Dimensions

Purpose

  • To provide support and assistance to the Metallurgical Laboratory Specialist and Metallurgists / Engineers in their activities and functions to enable the smooth running of the Metallurgical and Assay Laboratories in the Process Operations function.

In This Role You Will

Support Laboratory Operations

  • Collect regular plant samples and assist in sample preparation and analysis.
  • Perform particle size distribution on specified plant composite samples.
  • Conduct bottle roll test on specified samples
  • Carry out daily and weekly maintenance and inspection of Cyanide Analysers and auto-samplers.
  • Provide cleaning and maintenance support for sample bottles and buckets.
  • Gather information required for weekly reagent inventory and provide quantities to the Laboratory Specialist.
  • Conduct daily plant checks on dissolved oxygen, pH, carbon profiles, and cyanide concentrations.
  • Support the Plant Metallurgist in checking and calibrating the densitometer.
  • Support the Plant Metallurgist to Conduct weekly Primary and Pebble Crusher gap checks and Visio Rock Camera cleaning.
  • Determine waste that needs to be removed and disposed of at both the Metallurgical and Assay laboratories.
  • Determine liner measurements that need to be taken.
  • Conduct inspections on metallurgical equipment and identify any variances or defects.
  • Escalate any requests for metallurgical equipment maintenance post-inspection.

Work Scheduling and Allocation

  • Accomplish work objectives by determining own work schedule.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Senior Metallurgist

Health and Safety Management

  • Upkeep and adhere to standardized housekeeping practice and align these to specified Newmont Health and Safety management protocols.
  • Deliver own prescribed outcomes and / or provide support services, by applying Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environment systems, policies and protocols.
  • Inspect the Metallurgical and Assay laboratories to check and identify any potential safety issues and report timeously.
  • Attend all health and safety meetings.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Additional Knowledge

  • Basic knowledge of assay laboratory and metallurgy principles and industry standards.
  • Basic knowledge of assay laboratory metallurgy plant equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory and mobile equipment operation, as it relates to statutory regulations relevant to safety and the environment for the mining industry.
  • License B (Light Motor Vehicle).

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 – 2 years’ experience in metallurgical laboratory, assay laboratory and / or process plant, preferably in a gold mine.

  • Strong manual dexterity skills.
  • Sound communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound test equipment skills.
  • Sound Computer literacy skills – MS Office (Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint and Outlook).
