The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital invites applications from suitable qualified serving officers of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and sister agencies of the Ministry of Health for consideration for appointment into the following vacancy: Technical Manager (Mortuary)



Summary of Job/Functions

•To be responsible for efficient running of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Mortuary. This entails management of the facility within the resources available and within the broad departmental aim of teaching, training and research and providing effective, satisfactory and competitive service

Main Duties and Responsibilities

•Manage and provide an efficient day to day operations at the mortuary department
•Ensure robust systems are maintained for effective receipt, storage and release of adult and pediatric deceased
•Oversee effective scheduling of post mortuary activities and manage all staff, equipment and consumable resources associated with provision of mortuary services
•Liaise with service users, medical staff, senior management and technical staff on a daily basis on matters relating to the management, administration and day to day operations of the mortuary and related services
•Support the Lead consultant pathologist, senior medical and laboratory staff in the Pathology Department, by providing expert advice on the technical and administrative aspects of mortuary service provision, for example advice on staffing and/or storage capacity
•Responsible for ensuring that all operations comply with current standard operating procedures (SOPs), Quality Management Health and Safety, Data Protection, Client Confidentiality, Equal Opportunities, Human Resources, alcohol & smoking and financial policies
•Ensure the department achieves financial targets through appropriate management of resource, monitoring departmental expenditure against budget and recommending appropriate action
•The post holder has responsibility for understanding, promoting and ensuring the mortuary team’s compliance with appropriate mortuary policies and directives, including good record-keeping as required by law and hospital policy
•Shall provide information through the appropriate authority for insurance companies, investigative and authorized persons when needed
•He shall supervise the work of the autopsy clerks in the autopsy registry as well as in the autopsy theatre
•Ensure all necessary records, both those required by law and those required by the department and the hospital for internal use are properly kept and up to date
•Ensure that safety measures are strictly adhered to and standards maintained
•Report all accidents and incidents to the Head of Department or his/her appointee for appropriate action.
•Keep a record of all equipment and ensure that all are functioning properly, and maintenance schedules are followed and adhered.
•Supervision of all mortuary staff and ensure that discipline is maintained at all times
•Draw weekly rota for mortuary staff, In this regard he shall arrange staff leave to ensure that there is adequate staff cover for leave and sicknesses to ensure 24 hour-7 days a week service

Qualification Required & Experience

•BSc in Biomedical Science/Medical Laboratory Science or relevant degree
•Must have master’s degree (or equivalent) in relevant specialty
•Evidence of leadership and continuing professional development and management raining or equivalence will be an added advantage
•Applicant must be in good standing with the Allied Health Professional Council or relevant regulatory body
•Must have a minimum of 8 years working experience in related field
•The person should be able to complete at least one term in office before retirement
•Knowledge or experience of mortuary management or funeral home management or autopsy assistant training will be an advantage
•Knowledge of the coroner system in Ghana and other relevant laws and regulations such as the Anatomy Act, Births and Deaths, Registrations Law, Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Act and the Data Protection Act.
•Research experience
•Experience and experience of quality assurance
•Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
•Supervisory/team leadership experience
