Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.


Background Information

The assignment contributes to IOM’s continuous efforts to strengthen sustainable capacity development among its operations and its footprint as the UN’s development partner in migration matters. Specifically, the position is situated in the Coordination and Capacity Development Unit (CCDU) in the Department for Programme Support and Migration Management (DPSMM). The CCDU comprises a number of teams that run IOM Flagship programmes, incl. the Capacity Development for Migration Management team (CD4MM), Essentials of Migration Management 2.0 and the Global Migration, the Media Academy (GMMA) and the African Capacity Building Centre. The CCDU has a dual function: on the one hand it advances sustainable capacity development at IOM and Member States. On the other hand, it supports the Director of DPSMM in the crosscutting coordination of the unit in the department and across the entire organization.

The Intern will support the work of the unit by assisting relevant teams in the CCDU, in particular the CD4MM, GMMA, and EMM2.0, as well as the crosscutting coordination of the DPSMM. The different teams in the unit all work toward supporting IOM in providing ever more coherent and systematic capacity development support to government partners and stakeholders with a view to enhance programmatic impact and long-term sustainability. It thereby contributes to bolstering IOM’s role as UN Migration Agency and as a strong development actor supporting Member States in progressing towards the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration and the Sustainable Development Goals.

As the largest Department in IOM HQ, DPSMM holds a key role within the organization and leads a number of crosscutting initiatives and collaborations. Among others CDDU is leading the organization of the second Global Regional Thematic Specialists’ RTS Retreat, involving the Executive Office, the entire Operations Pillar and all Regional Offices. The intern will work with departments across the entire Operations Pillar and Regional Offices on the retreat.


Under the overall supervision of the Head of the CCDU and direct supervision of the Programme Officer (Migration Management) as well as in close collaboration with divisions, units and teams across DPSMM as well as relevant Country and Regional Offices, the intern will deliver concrete actions supporting the operationalization and rollout of the CCDU teams and their institutionalization in IOM’s work. The successful candidate will also support crosscutting departmental organization and coordination, including the organization of the Operations Pillar Global RTS Retreat.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the EMM and GMMA in their programme specific work.
  2. Work with DPSMM divisions to develop annual impact analysis and ensure knowledge management across thematic areas and organizational levels in order to optimize information access and use Support the organization of the Operations Pillar Global RTS Retreat.
  3. Support the Head of CCDU and CD4MM Programme Manager in crosscutting coordination at DPSMM level, incl. Protection Division (PxD), Labour Migration and Inclusion Division (LMI), International Border Governance Division (IBG), and Migration Health Division (MHD).
  4. Provide technical support with administrative tasks as needed for DPSMM cross-cutting work.
  5. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

  • Gain experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities.
  • Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration, and work on formulating and editing institutional strategies, priorities and workplans.
  • The Intern will acquire technical knowledge in policy and strategy.
  • The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.
  • The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.

Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • Enrolled or recently completed a Master’s Degree in International Development, Migration Studies, Political, or Social Sciences, International Relations or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or
  • University degree in the above fields.


  • Experience with international organizations and/or development cooperation; and,
  • Experience in liaising with governmental and diplomatic authorities, as well as with national and international institutions is an asset.

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of any other UN languages is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

  1. have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOMprogrammes and activities;
  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work inspecific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
