General Foreperson: Mine Operations At Newmont Mining Corporation


About This Role

  • To plan, coordinate, manage and execute short, medium and long-term operational activities of the load and haul in the pit, which include:
    • Safety.
    • Digging.
    • Loading.
    • Hauling.
    • Road maintenance.

In This Role You Will

Mine Operations Planning and Execution.

  • Execute short, medium and long-term mine plans.
  • Deliver weekly activity plan, in conjunction with Mine Maintenance, to ensure that all equipment required is ready by the end of the week.
  • Oversee the completion of the plan through the provision of a strong ‘bench strength’ team and close any gaps that may constrain achievement of targets.
  • Understand and manage key environmental issues with respect to the implementation of reclamation, waste disposal and spill management activities.
  • Coordinate activities with processing plant management to ensure continuity of total operations.
  • Ensure all haul road are maintained and free of sharp rocks.
  • Support the conceptualization of key infrastructural builds to support mine operations processes.
  • Manage the load and haul team to efficiently and effectively achieve their core mandates.
  • Investigate approaches to improving the meeting of mine yield targets (i.e. equipment efficiencies, tyre life).
  • Identify all performance and work-related issues and put in measures to address these.
  • Implement robust Mine Operations workplans and work according to plan for training purposes.
  • Develop the budget for the Mine Operations team and send to the Mine Operations Superintendent for final review and approval.
  • Manage and administer the granted budget within the stated boundaries.
  • Analyze daily production and cost data to verify that the load and haul section is operating within overall production and budget forecasts.
  • Compile and forward all requisitions for approval to the Mine Operations Superintendent.

Mine Operations Optimization and Continuous Improvement.

  • Implement opportunities for continuous improvement and specifically those best suited to Mine Operations activities.
  • Report all accidents and incidents in the work group to enable management to identify areas for improvement in work practices.
  • Remain accountable in the success of the Ahafo pit operations in achieving production goals safely, at the highest levels of productivity and at the lowest level of cost.

Stakeholder Management and Engagement.

  • Coordinate with Planning Engineers, Grade Control Engineers, Maintenance Foremen, Processing and Underground Mine Captains, Drill and blast, dewatering in the planning, design, integration and support of Mine Operations activities.
  • Coordinate, in conjunction with other Newmont departments, in identifying opportunities for improving mine efficiency and productivity.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of mine equipment with the Maintenance Department.
  • Interact with operating and non-operating departments to develop short-term operating goals and budgets.
  • Liaise with the Training Department to organize the implementation of training the national workforce to sustain and improve on Newmont global best practices.
  • Contribute input into all mine planning and maintenance schedules, in conjunction with the Mine Operations Superintendent.
  • Oversee that Mine Operations meets established statutory standards in the operation of the mine.
  • Oversee the work completed by on-site contractors undermine operations and hold them accountable to quality standards.

Health and Safety Management.

  • Responsible for the Shift Change process (PSM), ensuring that Supervisors keep Operators engaged and all Operators seen using FRM booklets.
  • Align the Mine Operations department with the requirement of Government of Ghana Agencies, lending institutions, shareholders’ interests, environmental, health and safety legislations and mining regulations, from a compliance perspective.
  • Adhere strictly to internal Newmont health and safety standards.
  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his / her supervision.
  • Provide hands-on assistance during operations activities and ensuring that safe work practices are followed.
  • Inspect all work areas for faded signages, substandard LV parking areas, substandard windrows at intersections and waste dumps, littering of work areas, parking of equipment near highwalls).
  • Work with Health and Safety Department to conduct periodic safety meetings, staff meetings and safety inspections.
  • Attend monthly safety inspection and meetings.
  • Conduct periodic Mine operations fatality risk verifications.
  • Investigate all reported incidents and complete for close out within 4 weeks.

Staff Management.

  • Create a suitable work environment to motivate staff, employees and contractors to achieve optimum effectiveness, productivity and operating costs.
  • Manage all direct reports by, in conjunction with HR by:
  • conducting performance appraisals.
  • recommending further / relevant training courses and development actions in accordance with Newmont’s people development program(s).
  • arranging for staff to undertake specific training.
  • contributing to building clear succession plans.
  • disciplining poor performance or actions.
  • managing and approving leaves of personnel under the section.
  • enhancing communication with staff through regular feedback, contact, meetings and briefings, etc.
  • building sufficient employee ‘bench strength’ especially Female headcounts.
  • conducting robust succession planning for the Mine Operations team.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations).

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining/civil engineering, Geology or related field.

Additional Knowledge.

  • Understanding of continuous improvement concepts.
  • Mine Captain certification from the Minerals Commission, Ghana

Experience.

  • Experience with Mine Dispatch Systems.
  • Minimum of 8 – 10 years’ experience in a mining environment, with a minimum 5 – 6 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
