Background on Ghana IHP:

The purpose of the USAID-funded Ghana Integrated Health Partnership (IHP) activity is to contribute to the Government of Ghana’s strategies to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths, including stillbirths, and improve their overall health and well-being by 2030. Activities are expected to advance Ghana toward increased localization, strengthening the capacity of Ghana institutions and local organizations to introduce, deliver, scale-up, and sustain the use of evidence-based, quality Reproductive Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH), Nutrition, family planning, malaria, and global health security services. The project will increase access, utilization and quality of maternal and child health, family planning, malaria, and nutrition services to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths in northern Ghana.

Job Summary

The Child Health and Malaria Advisor develops and supports the implementation of RMNCAH programme and interventions towards the quality health care and ultimately the reduction of preventable morbidity and mortality especially in children under five (U5). The advisor must be a healthcare professional with a strong background in pediatrics. The successful candidate will oversee the implementation, technical leadership and guidance of child health and malaria (for U5 and pregnant women) programming to enhance health system capacity and sustainability, improve child health outcomes, whilst reducing malaria morbidity and mortality amongst Women and children.

Key responsibilities

1. Child Health

  •  Provide technical assistance on child health including Digital-IMNCI.
  •  Provide technical assistance on Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment-Plus (ETAS+) to address in-patient facility-based clinical care of under-fives.
  •  Support the development of child health guidelines and protocols.
  •  Support the strengthening of child health services including community follow up of high risk children.
  •  Ensure adherence to national, protocols, guidelines and international best practices.
  •  Work closely GHS malaria and child health focal persons.
  •  Contribute to the activities of the Child Health TWG at GHS .
  •  Monitor THE progress of implementation and timely reporting.

2Malaria Programming

  •  Support implementation of malaria prevention and malaria in pregnancy programs.
  •  Provide technical assistance on quality of malaria case management in U5 and pregnant women.
  •  Strengthen malaria surveillance and monitoring.

3. Collaboration and partnership

  •  Collaborate with government, stakeholders, NGOs and healthcare facilities.
  •  Facilitate partnership to enhance ownership and service delivery.
  •  Support the integration of Malaria into RNMCAH and nutrition interventions.

Qualification and experience

  •  Health Professional with at least 10 years of continuous clinical practice.
  •  Masters in Public Health /Additional education in paediatrics or related field preferred.
  •  Proven experience in child health and malaria programming.
  •  Strong Knowledge of child health interventions and national guidelines.
  •  Familiarity with quality improvement methods.
  •  Experience working with international organizations.

Physical demands:

  •  While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be mobile in the healthcare facility environment and able to use standard office equipment.
  •  Must be able to communicate in verbal and written form.

Work environment :

  •  Typical office environment with exposure to a minimal noise level.
  •  Project HOPE employees work in the global health field and may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship”.
