Summary of Job/Functions
•To provide safe and effective anesthetic services during surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, with a focus on general anesthesia. The role includes patient assessment, administration of anesthesia, intraoperative monitoring and post-operate care, in accordance with national and hospital standards
Main Duties and Responsibilities
•Provide expert perioperative care pre-operative evaluation, intraoperative anaesthesia and post-operative anaesthesia and post-operative management while teaching residents, fellows and students
•Conduct pre-anaesthetic evaluations including history taking physical examination and risk assessment
•Counsel patients on anaesthesia options, procedures and risk
•Develop individualised anesthetic plan based on patient condition and surgical requirements and leading team discussions n anaesthetic plans
•Administer general anaesthesia and monitor patients during surgical procedures
•Ensure maintenance of vitual signs and patient safety throughout the procedure
•Manage airway, fluid therapy and emergency responses during surgery.
•Supervise or coordinate with anaesthesia technicians and nurses during procedures
•Oversee trainee-performed procedures (intubation, central lines, regional blocks) and adjusting plans as needed while ensuring patient safety
•Direct post anaesthesia care unit (PACU) management, teaching trainees about pain control and managing complications such as hemodynamic instability or delirium
•Ensure smooth handover to surgical and nursing teams post-procedure
•Provide care in intensive care units (ICU), emergency resuscitation and acute/chronic pain
•Mentor, supervise and train anaesthesia residents, fellows and medical students in clinical tasks
•Explain pharmacology, physiology and crisis management in real time and demonstrating advanced techniques (e.g awake fiberoptic intrubation, transesophageal echocardiography)
•Conduct didactic lectures, simulation training and departmental academic meetings
•Contribute to medical research, publishing in journals and engaging in clinical audits to improve
•Manage operating room flow, coordinating with surgical and nursing team and leading difficult airway or resuscitation protocols
•Lead simulation training, conducting bedside teaching rounds, and evaluating trainee progress through direct observation and standardised assessments
•Design or supervising clinical studies, implementing evidence based protocols and leading morbidity/morbidity conferences
•Participate in residency programme committees, credentialing trainees for procedures and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards
•Evaluate patient histories, lab results and surgical plans to determine an appropriate anesthesia and pain management plan
•Monitor patients following procedures to determine when they can be safely moved from one stage of recovery to the next
•Maintain detailed and accurate anaesthetic records
•Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings and clinical audits
•Adhere to infection prevention and control protocol
Qualification Required & Experience
•A member or Fellow with specilisation in anaesthesia from a recognised medical college
•Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
•Registered member and in good standing with the medical and dental council
•Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
•Research experience
•Clinical experience
